Retrospective “Let’s Save Venice!”
A lesson on how public goods fall prey to the few and a hymn to the last Venetians, their spirit and their heart.
Venice is pure romance, the dream of tourists from all over the world. But it is also a city that is still grandiose on the outside, while what remains of city life is a subculture of tourism service providers. On average, sixty thousand people visit the city every day: more than the number of residents, who have fallen below the fifty thousand mark, as at the time of the Black Death in 1438. Large ships seem unstoppable, almost like a disease. The Venetians move to the mainland because the rent has become unattainable; a real estate agent thinks of leaving a city that seems to be sinking; an elderly noblewoman takes it out on the municipal administration.
