The Moviola is an analog editing machine the size of a refrigerator with two pedals, one for advancing and the other for rewinding the film, a small screen and a speaker for audio. As cumbersome as it may seem to those accustomed to editing TikTok video on their phones, the Moviola was an engineering miracle of efficiency, used in virtually the same form for most of cinema’s existence, from its invention in 1922 until the 21st century.
