Marco Bellocchio’s cinema is a process of “shaping” the imaginary, dreams and anxieties that run through the real. Perhaps because of this, those who follow his long filmic output have rarely reread it according to documentary canons. In his documentary achievements, however, one can recognize in the watermark an intimate vision and at the same time a verification effort that broaden, on new coordinates, the mapping of the director’s overall filmic journey.

From his early work for the Union of Italian Communists in the late 1960s to the intense Marx can wait of 2021: an encounter that allows us to reread, through the words of its author, the path in Marco Bellocchio’s documentary cinema.
