The 18th edition of Pordenone Docs Fest concluded yesterday. Once again, Cinemazero’s documentary festival confirmed an extraordinary level of public participation. Over 3,500 tickets were sold (a number that continues to grow), with total attendance reaching 6,000. The event saw strong participation from young people and students, drawn in by screenings, talks, roundtables, workshops, conferences, masterclasses, concerts, and VR experiences.

There were 28 national premieres and over 300 guests from around the world, including directors, producers, scholars, experts, and professionals from the documentary industry. For five incredibly full days, the small Friulian town was once again the “capital of documentary film,” as the Italian press now calls it, highlighting the festival’s growing importance as part of Pordenone’s successful bid for Italian Capital of Culture 2027. Among the audience were more than sixty film students from all over Italy and, for the first time in the festival’s history, from across Europe. The educational programs saw remarkable turnout, with every initiative sold out. The newly inaugurated spazioZero, opened just a few weeks ago, showcased its versatility by hosting 5 conferences, 6 concerts, various industry events, and becoming an instantly popular cultural and social hub.

The Grand Jury Prize was awarded jointly to two films, a unanimous decision by the prestigious jury. The award went to the French film Un Pays en flammes by Mona Convert “for its portrayal of the magical, mystical, and mysterious world of a small community and its rituals. A dialogue between man, nature, and fire that brings to life a sensory experience and a hypnotic visual universe, rich with epiphanies and moments of stunning beauty.” Also awarded was Light Memories by Ecuadorian director Misha Vallejo Prut, praised for crafting a compact yet delicate, strong yet tender film that tells the story of a personal, thoughtful journey through the labyrinth of photographic imagery. The awards were presented by three internationally renowned directors: Roberto Minervini, Martina Parenti, and Sara Fgaier.

The Green Documentary Award, for best environmentally-themed film, was given to The Fabulous Gold Harvesting Machine by Alfredo Purailly De La Plaza, “for its gentle storytelling and rare visual beauty in depicting the universality of family bonds and the human being’s eternal struggle for resilience in the face of the world.”

La Mutante by Chilean filmmaker Constanza Tejo Roa, presented in its European premiere, won two awards, impressively from two different juries. It received the Critics’ Prize, awarded in collaboration with the Association of Italian Cinema Festivals and the Italian National Union of Film Critics. According to the accredited press, it is “a documentary of resistance that returns to the time of pregnancy as a process of self-creation. A voice that is unstandardized, like the bodies of women.”

Tejo Roa, present at the screening, also received the Young Audience Award, voted for by Cinemazero’s Young Club and accredited film students at the festival, with the following motivation: “for being a bold visual deconstruction of an inner journey seeking reconciliation between a love of life, cinema, and the love for life itself—a child—through a courageous narrative blending various cinematic styles and shedding light on often unspoken aspects of a deeply intimate and personal experience like pregnancy.”

Themes of rights, freedom, and inclusion were also reflected in the Audience Award, which went to Queer As Punk by director Yihwen Chen, a documentary about the queer Malaysian punk band Shh Diam. The filmmakers were present in the theater.

Finally, the Virtual Reality Award went to Fresh Memories – The Look by Volodomyr Kolbasa and Ondrej Mroavec, dedicated to the city of Kharkiv.

Pordenone Docs Fest is held under the high patronage of the European Parliament and with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture – Directorate General for Cinema, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Municipality of Pordenone, and Fondazione Friuli. An exceptional jury will evaluate the films in competition at the 18th edition of Pordenone Docs Fest – Le Voci del Documentario, taking place from April 2 to 6 at Cinemazero.

The three jurors include Roberto Minervini, winner of the Best Director award in the “Un Certain Regard” section at Cannes last year for I dannati, and a renowned filmmaker whose documentaries unveil the contradictions of deep America. Joining him is Martina Parenti, fresh from winning Best Director at IDFA in Amsterdam, Europe’s most prestigious documentary festival, for her film Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari. Completing the panel is Sara Fgaier, an editor, producer, and archival researcher, who recently made her directorial debut with her first fiction feature, Sulla terra leggeri, shot by cinematographer Alberto Fasulo and presented at the Locarno Film Festival.

Having three highly acclaimed artists on the jury confirms that Pordenone Docs Fest has become one of the most significant events for cinema del reale in Italy. Minervini, Parenti, and Fgaier are audiovisual professionals who, thanks to their talent, have gained international recognition, particularly for their ability to experiment and innovate—qualities that make them a perfect fit for Cinemazero’s festival.

As per tradition, the jurors will be special guests at the awards ceremony, which will take place at the festival’s grand finale on Sunday, April 6, at 9 PM at Cinemazero, during a special cine-concert celebrating the 130th anniversary of cinema’s invention.

On the same day, at 5:15 PM at Palazzo Badini, Roberto Minervini will hold an exclusive masterclass, open to the public, where he will discuss his cinematic journey, marked by his unique ability to merge fiction and documentary techniques. He will be in conversation with Alessandro Stellino, film critic and Artistic Director of Festival dei Popoli in Florence.

In his films, Minervini has explored life on the margins of contemporary America, portraying a society where more and more people find themselves excluded due to racial and class divisions. His documentaries offer a deeper understanding of the contradictions within the United States today, making it especially important for the festival to present a special homage featuring three screenings of his works:

A documentary exploring an invisible territory at the edge of illegality and anarchy, where the forgotten dwell and the abyss of deep America unfolds.

📽️ Saturday, April 5, at 4:30 PM – Stop the Pounding Heart (with Minervini in attendance)
A powerful exploration of adolescence, family and social values, gender roles, and religion in rural Southern America.

📽️ Sunday, April 6, at 2:30 PM – What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire? (introduced by Minervini)
A reflection on racism in the U.S., as well as an intimate portrait of a community fighting for justice, dignity, and survival. The film premiered in competition at the 2018 Venice Film Festival.

The rich program of Pordenone Docs Fest, which will be unveiled to the press and public on Monday, March 24, at 11:30 AM, also includes another major masterclass on Saturday, April 5, at 12:00 PM at Cinemazero, featuring Martina Parenti. She will focus on her artistic career and collaboration with Massimo D’Anolfi, a creative partnership that has earned worldwide recognition. A key element of her filmmaking is the innovative use of archival materials, making this event a unique opportunity to explore cinema del reale and the narrative power of images from the past.

Pordenone Docs Fest repudiates war with Afic – Association of Italian Film Festivals and EMERGENCY

Culture has a fundamental role in building a society of peace, and the film festivals on Italian territory are principals with a decisive role in spreading the values and principles guaranteed by the Constitution.

Our festival joins other Italian film festivals that have accepted the invitation of AFIC (Association of Italian Film Festivals) to support Emergency’s R1PUD1A campaign-which is again this year NOT a sponsor of the festival-to reaffirm the repudiation of war as enshrined in Article 11 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic: “Italy repudiates war as an instrument of offense against the freedom of other peoples and as a means of settling international disputes.”

The 18th edition of the festival consolidates the festival’s green actions with its Green Manifesto in 10 points + 1. The green soul of the festival, which has always been devoted to ecology and witnessing good environmental practices, is embodied in the award for Best Documentary with environmental themes.

SNCCI Critics’ Award
In collaboration with AFIC – Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema and the Sindacato Nazionale Critici Cinematografici Italiani, three nationally nominated jurat3, journalistɜ who cover cinema, will choose the winning film for the SNCCI Critics’ Award. This year’s jury is composed of Irene Gianeselli, Paola Olivieri and Fabrizio Croce.

DocsXR Audience Award
An award certifying the quality selection – all works are offered as national premieres – of immersive and interactive documentaries at Pordenone Docs Fest. At the DocsXR booth in Piazza XX Settembre, viewers can vote for their favorite immersive experience.

WHO CAN APPLY?

• Filmmakers under 35 years old with a documentary project idea (no restrictions on format, type, or theme)
• Residents of Triveneto Region or international filmmakers interested in producing in Triveneto Region ((regions of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol)
• The idea can be for a feature-length, short, or medium-length documentary. Even if you haven’t defined the format yet, you can still apply!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• The first pitch session (in English) and networking meetings will be held on April 4, 2025, in Pordenone.
• Selected projects will take part in matchmaking speed dates with established production companies from the Northeast, creating real opportunities for project development.
• An online tutoring program will guide filmmakers in developing, writing, and creating a pitch deck and teaser between April and July. The final presentation will take place in July 2025 at Lago Film Fest.
• At both Pordenone and Revine Lago, a jury of experts will select a winner.

THE WINNING PROJECT (at both festivals) WILL RECEIVE:

• ZaLab: A potential distribution opportunity on the ZaLab View streaming platform

Additionally, in Pordenone, one of the selected projects will be awarded the #DocsConnect Taskovski Training Award in collaboration with Taskovski Films.

During Lago Film Fest in July 2025, the winning project will also have the chance to collaborate with Piattaforma Lago, within various initiatives organized throughout the year.

About Nord/Est/Doc/Camp

Nord/Est/Doc/Camp offers a step-by-step program of feedback, networking, and training through its partner festivals. It provides directors and producers, in an informal setting, access to the expertise of carefully selected professionals. Through a series of meetings and workshops, the program aims to help participants maximize the potential of their films in progress. This includes support for editing, post-production, festival strategies, and distribution, with the goal of strengthening the dramaturgy and profile of the works and broadening their dissemination and distribution opportunities.

The program targets documentary and hybrid (non-fiction) films in the editing phase, produced or co-produced by companies based in Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with a final runtime exceeding 45 minutes.

Highlights from Previous Editions

The first two editions featured eight projects, including:

• Lisca bianca – Nata libera by Giuseppe Galante and Giorgia Sciabbica (produced by Ginko Film) and The Other Side of the Pipe by Marko Kumer (produced by Incipit Film), both premiered at the 2023 Visioni dal Mondo festival in Milan.
• Vista mare by Julia Gutweniger and Florian Kofler (produced by Albolina Film), presented at the Locarno Critics’ Week and numerous other international festivals. It won the award for Best Italian Documentary at the Festival dei Popoli and was distributed by Trent Film.

From the 2nd edition, the first project to debut was Noi siamo gli errori che permettono la vostra intelligenza by Erika Rossi (produced by Ghirigori), which won the Audience Award at the 2024 PerSo – Perugia Social Film Festival.

Cinemazero organizes the 18th edition of the festival “Pordenone Docs Fest – The Voices of Documentary”, a special opportunity to present and promote high-quality and artistically crafted documentaries. The festival is designed for a broad and diverse audience (it is “audience-oriented”, hosted by a long-standing arthouse cinema), with a thematic focus—though not exclusively—on current affairs, social issues, human rights, and ecology.

Uno sguardo sul mondo e un’attenzione costante al territorio e ai temi sociali: Pordenone Docs Fest è tutto questo, e molto di più.

Quest’anno, per la prima volta, il festival del documentario di Cinemazero, che si terrà dal 10 al 14 aprile, ha coinvolto tre artisti del territorio ma di fama nazionale per realizzare una campagna di sensibilizzazione contro la violenza sulle donne. Sara Colaone, Davide Toffolo ed Elisa Turrin (Upata) hanno disegnato, in esclusiva per il festival, ciascuno un soggetto originale (con titolo, rispettivamente: “Nella sua pelle, sempre”, “La ricostruzione del maschio”, “Female Rage”), da cui verranno ricavati poster e plance di grandi dimensioni, che – in collaborazione col Comune di Pordenone – riempiranno la città, per dire no alla violenza di genere, per promuovere educazione ed empatia, per arginare e contrastare a livello sociale il fenomeno, che tristemente continua a fare notizia in Italia soprattutto con i fatti di cronaca più evidenti, al ritmo di una donna uccisa ogni tre giorni. Un fenomeno che riguarda la comunità e che nella comunità deve trovare risposta. Da ciò anche l’idea di sensibilizzare un pubblico largo. 

Il festival, come da tradizione, dà ampio spazio a film e riflessioni su questo tema, promuovendo educazione ed empatia, per arginare e contrastare a livello sociale il fenomeno. Ma con questo intervento di “poster art” intende sfruttare le affissioni pubbliche – spesso utilizzate dalle kermesse culturali solo per comunicare date e presenza delle iniziative – anche per dare un messaggio sociale. Lo fa coinvolgendo tre artisti tutti nati a Pordenone e che, in vario modo, continuano a essere legati al territorio. 

Sara Colaone, classe 1970, è autrice di fumetti, illustratrice e docente all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. Cura la sezione dedicata al fumetto per la rivista “Nuovi Argomenti”. I suoi graphic e visual novel sono stati pubblicati in diverse lingue. Fra questi, “In Italia sono tutti maschi”.  Non ha bisogno di presentazioni Davide Toffolo, classe 1965, musicista dei Tre allegri ragazzi morti, uno degli autori di fumetto più amati in Italia. La più giovane, Elisa Turrin, in arte “Upata”, è nata nel 1996. Lavora come illustratrice, fumettista e animatrice. Si è laureata in Fumetto e Illustrazione all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna e in Illustrazione all’ISIA di Urbino. È appassionata di natura e di ogni forma di autoproduzione. 

Con lo stesso spirito di produttore culturale e sociale, quest’anno il festival ha deciso di introdurre anche la formula del Social Sponsor. Ogni serata del festival sarà dedicata a un’organizzazione diversa che opera nel sociale, rinunciando a spazi e sostegni pubblicitari, per promuovere invece le loro attività: protagoniste di questa edizione sono Amnesty International, Emergency, Scuola Fatoma, Un Ponte Per che lavorano ogni giorno per migliorare le condizioni di vita dei più fragili, in ogni parte del pianeta. From April 10th to 14th, with the XVII edition of Pordenone Docs Fest “Le Voci del Documentario”, the Cinemazero festival that every year brings the best of international real cinema to Pordenone, the city once again becomes the capital of documentary, an exclusive stage for nationally premiering stories that tell the world beyond the information accessible through various media channels.

“We will focus on the rights of women and minors, shedding light on lesser-known yet no less important stories. We will introduce them to an attentive audience, eager to go beyond what is daily recounted by mainstream media. An audience that expects non-trivial views every year, shedding light on both significant and lesser-known themes, guided by cinematic quality and the importance of testimonies, with a perspective of social impact through documentary,” says curator Riccardo Costantini. “Cinemazero couldn’t help but pay tribute – with a retrospective, a roundtable, and many guests – to Franco Basaglia, on the centenary of his birth. For us, this event is not just a simple anniversary directed to the past but above all a warning for our present, an arrow aimed towards the future. That’s why Franco Basaglia is 100 years old, an indicative present, here and now. In Friuli, in Italy, in the world. Because Basaglia has been one of the most international figures that Italian culture and society have been able to express from the sixties to today: his research, his actions, his ideas are alive and active wherever there is a reformist will of society, wherever there is critical and libertarian thought.”

The festival dedicates a retrospective to this intellectual cornerstone of the twentieth-century history, also itinerant in the cinemas of Friuli Venezia Giulia and then in Italy, reconstructing many of the stages of the “Basaglia journey” that have Trieste and Gorizia as fundamental places. The initiative, supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, also fits into the cultural paths of “Go2025! – Gorizia / Nova Gorica European Capital of Culture”. For the film section, it is curated by Federico Rossin and is the result of extensive research in major archives. It is a program with a pedagogical approach aimed mainly at new generations, which, with television and film products, both Italian and international, tells the human and political story of Basaglia and the anti-psychiatric movement, accompanied by a publication containing a critical filmography dedicated to documentary and mental illness with an international and trans-historical perspective. Also planned is the presentation, in collaboration with the Cinecittà Archives – LUCE Institute (in the year of the LUCE centenary), of “Nessuno o tutti – Matti da slegare” by Silvano Agosti, Marco Bellocchio, Sandro Petraglia, and Stefano Rulli, a broader, richer, and more varied version of the well-known “Matti da Slegare”, on the big screen for the first time since 1976 in its rediscovered full version.

Also this year, many national premieres are presented to the public and in competition. Among these, “Mourning in Lod” by Israeli director Hilla Medalia offers hope for peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: from immersion in the microcosm of violence, anger, and hope of Lod/Lydd, one of the five “mixed” cities inhabited by Israelis and Palestinians, 50 kilometers west of Jerusalem, emerges an incredible story that indissolubly and forever binds the families of the two parties involved in a gift of love and future.

With the touching “Mediha” by Hasan Oswald (who will be present at the festival), also produced by Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, attention is brought back to the Yazidi genocide recounted through the eyes and determination of a teenager (who signs many of the shots and part of the direction) facing the trauma of ISIS imprisonment and slavery – of which she was a victim – without resigning herself, becoming a protagonist and witness to the redemption from the sale abroad of even her younger siblings.

“Hiding Saddam Hussein,” twenty years later, brings back the truly incredible testimony of a simple man, an Iraqi farmer who – obeying orders – hid the dictator in his own home for eight months, during one of the most ruthless manhunts of recent decades. A story signed by Norwegian-Kurdish director Halkawt Mustafa (present at the festival).

After the success of “Be My Voice” (and its Italian tour conducted by Tucker Film), winner of the audience award at the festival in 2021, Swedish-Iranian director Nahid Persson returns to Italy, accompanying her latest documentary, “Son of the Mullah,” which tells the story of Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam, who, unable to speak freely in his own country, was forced to expose its contradictions from abroad… until being deceived and then executed by the Iranian regime. The constant narrative of corruption, hypocrisy, and ferocity of regimes is a concrete example of the role the festival aims to play in supporting films even beyond the duration of the event.

Finally, there’s room for lightness with another national premiere, “Alreadymade” by Dutch director Barbara Visser, which tells the absurd story of Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain,” the most famous urinal of all time, of which the director investigates the paternity revealing unexpected behind-the-scenes. The reflection on art and its power, with ironic and irreverent tones, is also present in “Soviet Barbara,” another national premiere, directed by Icelandic Gaukur Ulfarsson, which sees international “art star” Ragnar Kjartansson fully recreate in “Soviet” style the American soap opera “Santa Barbara” in a Moscow museum owned by an oligarch, with Putin’s blessing and the presence of the Pussy Riot, in a contrast of denunciation and provocation.

Many collateral events, as always, enrich the offerings of the event, which alongside screenings, provides masterclasses, roundtable discussions, industry meetings, and in-depth sessions facilitated by professionals, associations, and NGOs. There is a particular focus on the “Missing Triangle,” referring to the significant gap in the organized and cohesive relationship between directors/producers, distributors, and cinema exhibitors concerning documentaries, as well as a spotlight on emerging Italian documentary filmmakers in “Italian Doc, Future!”

Also noteworthy is the second edition of Nord Est Doc Camp, a workshop for finalizing documentaries in the editing phase, produced in the Triveneto region and supported by all the Film Commissions of these territories. In its first edition, one of the films followed – “Vista Mare” – won the prestigious “Festival dei Popoli” and was presented at the Locarno Festival, demonstrating the effectiveness of the mentoring program developed.
