Surviving the great love. Memory, recollection, and pain intersect in an extremely sweet, poetic, and delicate documentary.
Director Zara Zerny tenderly portrays nine elderly Danes. They speak about their love lives, aging, pain, and their perspectives on life and death. The eloquent, sincere, and sometimes poetic speakers are filmed at home, sitting in a chair or lying in bed. Zerny alternates these static shots with artistic representations, sometimes dreamy or abstract, of their stories. Old home videos are also projected onto the interviewees, reflecting a different and past existence. The interviews create a group portrait of a unique generation that will not be with us for much longer. With their passing, their stories will perish, along with the furnishings and objects they have cherished for decades, ranging from wooden ceilings, to voile curtains and pendulum clocks, to rows of framed photos of generations of relatives and ancestors.
